Originally named Fairmount in 1862, the community adopted the name of West Orange the following year and became incorporated as a town in 1900. A private residential area known as Llewellyn Park was the first planned residential community in the nation. Located in this section is the inventor Thomas Edison's estate, Glenmont. Edison's laboratories and motion picture studio where the first movie camera was developed is also located in West Orange.
