The region's first home was built around 1677 near an Indian trail known as South Orange Avenue. The community is largely residential with a variety of housing ranging from modest colonials to large Tudor and Victorian mansions. Bordering on the heavily wooded South Mountain Reservation, South Orange contains more than 60 acres of parkland, three municipal pools, tennis courts and sports fields. South Orange is also the home to Seton Hall University.
