The area known as "Newark Mountains" was renamed Orange in 1780 after William, Prince of Orange. In 1860, Orange was formally incorporated and in 1892 changed its status to township. The commercial centers on Main Street and Central Avenue are thriving due in large part to Orange's designation as a New Jersey Urban Enterprise Zone. In addition, the municipality is an easy commute to Newark and New York City.
