Located on the west bank of the Passaic River, Nutley was settled by the Dutch before 1700. It was originally part of Bloomfield Township until 1839. Nutley's foundation is residential, and most of the housing is owner-occupied. There is a central shopping area along with several smaller business districts. In addition to several parks and playground, a 28 acre County Park lies within the community.
