Livingston was formed in 1813 by rejoining sections of Springfield and Caldwell called "Canoe Brook." Although farming was the primary occupation in the 19th century, industry began to flourish with early production of brooms and hats. The town provides outstanding recreational facilities including two swimming pools, 600 acres of parkland and more than 59 recreation programs. The Thomas Force Homestead, built in 1749, is one of the town's oldest dwellings.
