Settled in the late 1600's, the community was originally called Camptown until 1852 when it separated from Clinton Township and changed its name to Irvington. Although many residents commute to jobs, others work in Irvington's abundant light industries, service companies, small independent shops, and food markets. The Garden State Parkway runs through the town while three other major highways can be reached with in minutes.
