Originally part of Caldwell in an area farmed by Dutch settlers, Fairfield became the most recent of Essex County's municipalities in 1964. Conveniently located near Routes 46 and 80, the community has attracted a large concentration of business and industry. Yet the residential neighborhoods remain treelined and suburban in character. Major industries in town include Curtis-Wright, T-Fal, Ricoh, Mita Copystar, Horowitz Bookbinders and U.S. Testing.
