The smallest community in Essex County was conceived in the 1880's by Anthony Drexel, of the Philadelphia banking family. Incorporated as a borough in 1902, Essex Fells later became a township. The community has been developed with strong planning restrictions resulting in all single-family dwellings and nearly no commercial use of the land. The only commercial properties are the Essex Fells Country Club and the Fells Brook Tennis Club.
