Once a part of Newark, East Orange was incorporated as a town in 1863, later becoming a city in 1899. Diverse recreational facilities include tennis courts, pools, parks and a YMCA. The city provides an abundance of cultural & educational events such as jazz concerts, ethnic festivals and children's programs. Located within the city are Upsala Collage, East Orange General Hospital, Veterans Affairs Medical Center and Kessler Institute of Rehabilitation.
