Incorporated as a township in 1798 as part of the area known as "Horseneck Tract," Caldwell was named to honor the Reverand James Caldwell, a soldier in the Revolutionary War. Caldwell is the birthplace of President Grover Cleveland, now a state-managed historical site. A 42-acre park features tennis courts, baseball fields and playgrounds. Caldwell is a residential community with a well-established commercial area. It hosts "First Night - West Essex" on New Years Eve.
