Named for the Revolutionary War General Joseph Bloomfield, the area was settled in the 1660's and was originally one of three wards in Newark where it was called "Wardesson." Outdoor recreation is extensive with 70 acres of municipal parks, 140 acres of County Parks, and three private golf courses. Cultural and civic centers offer social and recreational activities. In addition, the first annual Octoberfest drew 100,000 visitors in 1993.
