Settled in the 1660's by Dutch colonists, Belleville was originally part of Newark where it was knows as the "Second River Section." In 1839, it became a separate community, adopting its current name from the French language for "pretty village." Belleville will soon become home to the Garden State Cancer Center, northern New Jersey's first cancer research facility.
